The area prospered during the late 1800's: farming on the rich marshlands, timber from the forests, and shipbuilding along the coastline all contributed to the local economy.

Much of this past can still be seen in the present day village. Many buildings remain from the mid to late 1800's, and reflect the various styles and influences of their time.

 Crooked Creek hiking trail

For hikers - we have two beautiful trails in the village.

The Trans Canada trail runs along the edge of the marsh, following an abandoned rail bed for about 20 km towards the Hopewell Rocks.

The trail is flat and open. Walking it will give you a good sense of the extensive marshlands in the region.

The Crooked Creek Trail is an enjoyable forest walk that climbs quickly through the woods to finish at the spectacular Crooked Creek Lookout.
wild orchid

The forest floor is covered with ferns and wildflowers, and if you're lucky you may even see some wild orchids.

A great escape from the summer crowds !

Crooked Creek lookoutThe Crooked Creek lookout: a short drive from the village is the perfect place to view the inland forest.

In the Fall it is a wonderful place to see the changing colours of the leaves.
